Author: Tomasso de Vio

Tomasso (Thomas) de Vio was born as Jacop Vio on February 20, 1468 in Gaeta, Italy (in the kingdom of Naples). He received his name Tomasso when he entered the order of the Dominicans in 1484. He is better known as Cajetanus, a reference to his birthplace Gaeta. Cajetanus became abbot of his order in 1508. Pope Leo X elevated him to cardinal in 1517. He was Archbishop of Palerma a year later. Emperor Karel V granted him the dioceses of Gaeta in 1519.

Cajetanus is especially known because of his interrogation of Luther. Cajetanus was sent by the pope as Papal Legate with special authority to Augsburg. Luther failed to confess and he escaped under threat of captivity. Catejanus was also commissioned to find support in Germany to support a war against the Turks. Later he was involved on many occasions in various negotiations and operations. He was an influential man in the clergy. He was counsellor to several popes on many occasions. He is considered to be one of the most important theologians of his time.

Cajetanus died in Rome on August 9, 1534.
