Author: Elisabeth, Queen of Romania under the
pseudonym: Carmen Sylva
Her real name was Pauline Elisabeth Ottilie Luise zu
Wied. She was born on December 29, 1843 in Neuwied, Germany.
She was the daughter of a German Prince, Hermann zu Wied and
Marie van Nassau-Weilburg.
At age 18 she was introduced to Prince Karel van Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen
and 8 years later they were married. They had a daughter,
Maria, but she died in childhood. Her husband became monarch
in 1866, king of Romania in 1881 until his death in 1914.
Lisabeth was very artistic. She played the piano and
organ and graced herself with the art of singing. She painted
and wrote books. She wrote fairy tales, poems and novels.
Her books were published in German and Romanian, and also
in a number of other languages like Dutch. She was also active
in works of charity and in social and cultural areas. She
helped to look after wounded soldiers during the Russian –
Elisabeth died after a full and rich life on March 2,
1916 in Bucharest, age 72
